Autumn 1 – Why Does Your Country Need You?
First of all: welcome to Year 6! This is always a busy year, and an important year for everyone involved in it, but we hope that it will also be a fun, challenging and enjoyable year.
Our first topic in Year 6 will be focused on World War Two looking at how children were affected by the war and mostly concentrating on the effects of the rationing, air raids and evacuation. We will, however, try and broaden the children’s historical understanding of other aspects of the war: why it started and the historical context of some of the important events. To support our learning we will be taking part in two visits; a visit to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and the American Cemetery on Thursday 28th September and a teacher lead evacuation day later in the half term.
As far as possible we will try and link other subjects into our topic. In art, we will be looking at Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, which will also provide the starting point for a unit on dance in PE. Our Literacy will start by looking at non-chronological reports about the war, but will also have lessons on poetry, descriptive writing and newspaper reports. At the same time, we will begin to prepare the pupils for this summer’s SATs tests by focusing on spelling, grammar and punctuation.
Our New To Year 6 / Meet The Teacher meeting will be on Monday 18th September. We will be talking about Secondary transfer, SATs Tests, homework and anything else people are interested in! In the meantime, we’d like to make you aware of some extra information:
